Hey creatives! We are back with another C + W interview. Today we meet the lovely Kylah Dobson. She is the creator of Seasonally Nourished, a site dedicated to helping busy moms and families adopt healthy eating rituals that adhere to the seasons. Kylah lives in Cobden Ontario with her husband and two beautiful girls, Dayvah, 5 and Rainah, 2. You can easily feel through her words how slowing down, simplifying, and eating whole nutritious foods are what makes for a truly happy family. I certainly would love to have a meal with them! Enjoy! xx
Where do you live? Describe your abode.
We live in the countryside in a beautiful, simple home that we (mostly) built ourselves. Although our house isn’t huge it’s completely open concept so it feels quite spacious. We have high ceilings and there are lots of windows that bring in tons of natural light and we have views of our trees, meadows and gardens in every direction. We built our home to be an expression of how our family enjoys living.
What makes you a creative?
I love colour. I love textures. I love art and design. I love creating simple beauty. I get a lot of joy out of bringing these together through preparing and photographing simple, healthy meals and creating a warm and welcoming home for my family and visitors to enjoy.
I love how art, design and creativity can show up in everyday living. Being creative doesn’t mean you need to be a studio artist. To me it simply means I allow my creative energy to flow through things I do every single day - cooking, putting dry foods in jars on my pantry shelf or an arrangement of wildflowers in a vase.
Where does simplicity show up in your life?
I aspire to bring simplicity into most aspects of my life - some areas it is easier than others. This has become more and more important to me as the mother of two young children. Ultimately I want to spend more time with my girls reading books, exploring the outdoors, and eating homemade meals together than accumulating ‘stuff’ (or working like crazy to make more money to accumulate more stuff) so we try to keep toys, clothes and material objects to a min - for both kids and adults - essentially to own less and live more and become really, really mindful about what we spend our money on and bring into our home.
What is your style?
Rustic modern. A little boho. I love really crisp, clean lines and a lot of white contrasted with weathered wood, rich colors, old textiles and handmade pottery.
Do you have any daily habits or routines?
Coffee with my husband. A fresh, homemade breakfast with my daughters. A warm dinner shared with my family. Always time outdoors. Usually yoga. And lots of meaningful work in between.
How do you approach living well?
Holistically. Make small changes everyday towards personal and whole family wellness.
What does balance look like for you in your daily life with being a creative + mama?
Slowing down. I do a lot of small creative projects with my girls or around my girls. The ‘pace’ isn’t always what it would be by myself but watching my children explore, experiment and discover in the kitchen and garden with me or through paints, crayons or collage is extremely inspiring - they get so much joy out of the ‘little stuff’ - picking wildflowers, mixing colours together, even stirring ingredients together in a bowl.
When/how do you feel most beautiful and most aligned with yourself?
When I’m eating tons of fresh vegetables, spending time in the sun everyday, doing meaningful work that helps others, moving my body through yoga, laughing with friends, laying in my husbands arms, snuggling and giggling with my girls and slowing down to enjoy mealtime with my family.
What are some of your imperfections and how do you embrace them?
Whoa! Where do I start? I believe the human condition is that we’re all perfectly imperfect. For me progress = perfection.
We are constantly growing and working on ourselves. What are you working on right now?
Lots! Cooking, photography, yoga, love, parenting, mindfulness…. just about everything. I try to make small changes everyday that accumulate, over time, in life change.
What is your beauty regime?
For a long time it felt like I barely even had a beauty regime when my girls were still really young but I’ve discovered that even 5-mins of self care in the bathroom goes a long way towards feeling radiant for a busy, working mama. I’ve gotten rid of all chemical products and replaced them with creams and shampoos from Living Libations and Sigrid Naturals.
What are 5 things you cannot live without?
What advice do you have for mothers looking to find balance in both being healthy and staying creative?
It’s rare to feel balance every single day. I try to approach balance holistically - when one part of the whole is neglected the rest suffers so I try to give all the parts of me that need nourishment a bit of time everyday - 20 minutes on my yoga mat, a delicious salad, a few moments in the garden, and time with my girls - it takes planning and prioritizing but it seems to be coming to together most (not all) days.
